North East Online fencing training wins National Award!

Street Swords Lockdown online training programme was awarded the Viveca Abrahams Memorial for Innovation at the recent British Fencing Awards!

The Lockdown online fencing sessions were a result of COVID-19 closing down all clubs and confining fencers to their homes. Coaches Beth Davidson and Stewart Watson wanted to find some way some way to carry on coaching and keep everyone fit while in lockdown!

It was thought that these Zoom classes would only interest local fencers but as each session took place, more and more people have been joining in from all over the world; the UK, Canada, United States, Australia, Holland, Philippines, and Italy! What wasn’t anticipated was how these online fencing sessions have created a valuable community sharing experiences of being in quarantine and tackling feelings of isolation!

Street Swords recently received emergency Covid funding from County Durham Community Foundation to help support coaching and delivery costs of this Darlington based fencing programme.

To join in an online fencing training session https://fencing2home.teamapp.com  They are suitable for most fencers and for all weapons!
