Newcastle Fencing Club strike Gold!
Newcastle Fencing Club had some great success this weekend with one of our young fencers winning the Under 10 British Championships and another coming third.
On Sunday 10th April fencers from across the country gathered in Oundle, Peterborough to compete for the title of ‘British Champion’.
Three fencers from Newcastle Fencing Club entered the boys under 10 event Toby Aberdeen, William Hays and Eddie Mackay. The boys fought valiantly though out the competition and placed themselves in strong positions for the elimination rounds.
Unfortunately William went out in 14th place whilst Eddie and Toby progressed through to the semi finals. Both semi finals were tough fights with Eddie eventually being beaten 10-9 in a close exchange with hits being traded between the fencers, Eddie secured a bronze medal. Toby was having a similar match next to Eddie until he pulled away some spectacular hits to finish the fight with a 10-6 victory.
The final was a challenge physically and emotionally with four double hits to start the match but Toby realised the weakness in his opponents fencing and quickly finished winning the fight 10-6 and coming the British under 10 epee champion.
In the girls event Newcastle Fencing Club had one fencer entered, Eve Aberdeen, the youngest girl fencing who came a well earned 11th place after beating numerous older and taller fencers throughout the day.
