The weekend of the 4th and 5th July saw the inter-Regional championships take place in Nottingham where the best fencers from UK regions come together and battle it out in foil, epee and sabre to be crowned the best!

9 regions were represented on this 2 day event with 486 bouts being fought! For the North East many of our top fencers were unavailable but this didn’t dampen the spirit! There was a good mix of Winton veterans and newcomers, with some competing in two weapons as we didn’t have a full team!

Saturday the NE had a slow start but Sunday saw our best performances come to see us rise 2 places in the ranking from 9th to 7th, only narrowly losing to Combined Services by 2 bouts!

The Winton Cup was the brainchild of two brothers, Nicholas and Bobby Winton who were keen fencers and wanted to develop the sport in the regions.  This year was very poignant as only two days earlier, Sir Nicholas Winton passed away at 106! He would be best remembered for saving over 600 Jewish children in WW2.  Those fencers who competing this weekend paid their respects by giving one minutes applause to celebrate his life!  The video of this can be found HERE
