NE Fencers become Veteran National Champions!
Two North East fencers became National Champions at this weekend's Veteran Championships held in Gloucester.
Beth Davidson from Darlington and Christopher Farren from Pittington proved they were the best in the over 40 year old category of the fencing weapon of sabre. For Chris this was the first time he took gold at this event by beating the 2013 winner Rob Penton, but has been National Champion in the senior event in 2001.
Beth was able to produce a record breaking unbroken run of 6 titles in this age group!
This annual event brings together all veterans of fencing, men and women from 40yrs to over 80yrs who fence in each weapon of foil, epee and sabre. This is a qualifying event for World Championships taking place in Limoges in France for those aged over 50! For Darlington fencer Chris Cranston-Selby, he was only 2 places short of qualifying for the GB sabre team in his first attempt but has another opportunity in June!
Both Chris and Beth train at Laszlo's Fencing Club at Durham University Sports Centre with Hungarian coach Laszlo Jakab.
